Signs of excessive damp bricks or damp stone facings usually become evident after a few decades of the harsh and varied UK climate. Our strong winds, heavy rainfall and air pollutants wear down the exterior protective face of the brick or stone and they then become too damp .

Damp Bricks are Necessary

Contrary to what most people believe a brick or stone wall should allow some damp from rain to form in the very outer part of the facing. These damp brick faces are essential in ensuring that the home is able to breathe and keep the inside environment dry and comfortable for those living there.

Brick Dampness Cured by Wethertex 0500 300407

When the brick or stone outer surface is damp the core temperature of the wall drops and creates a difference in pressure and temperature to the inner wall surface. This difference in water pressure causes osmosis whereby the higher pressured internal air is drawn outwards through the wall to the less saturated outer wall and from there back into the atmosphere.

Breathable Damp Wall Solutions

This need to breathe is one of the reasons that the materails used to build our homes are not impermeable and as such it is crucial to never put any sort of oil based coating on an external wall. Putting the heating on will be like wrapping yourself in a plastic bag and then doing some vigorous exercise ie you will get very hot but also very damp and uncomfortable.

Also a cause of trapping damp in brick walls is inappropriate pointing of the exterior masonry with a highcement mortar mix instead of using a good amount of lime and sand. cement has its strengths but it is completely waterproof and does not breathe so ensure you add some lime to guarantee the pointing breathes as well as the bricks.
