When the brick or stone outer surface is damp the core temperature of the wall drops and creates a difference in pressure and temperature to the inner wall surface. This difference in water pressure causes osmosis whereby the higher pressured  internal air is drawn outwards through the wall to the less saturated outer wall and from there back into the atmosphere.
